City Council to consider marijuana sales tax ballot question at August 31 meeting

marijuanaNF

Brighton City Council will consider at the August 31 City Council meeting whether to approve a resolution regarding placing marijuana sales on the ballot for the November 2, 2021 Election.

The ballot for marijuana sales would allow for the sale of retail marijuana and marijuana products within city limits. In addition, the ballot question asks voters if they approve of a 4-percent sales tax on marijuana and marijuana products sold at retail stores in Brighton. City staff have estimated that approximately $1.5 million of marijuana sales tax could be collected per year. Revenue from this special sales tax would be used to fund capital projects, including recreational amenities (with no more than 20-percent of the revenues to be spent on administrative costs).

Under TABOR, in order for the City to impose the marijuana sales tax, voter approval is required from its citizens.

The Aug. 31 City Council meeting is open to the public and will be held at 5:45 p.m. at Brighton City Hall located at 500 S. 4th Avenue.
