North pond at Brighton Park to be drained as part of water-saving project

Work to drain the north pond at the Brighton Recreation Center to install a geosynthetic clay liner began on June 1. Installing the new liner will help to mitigate loss of water from the pond and save the City of Brighton thousands of dollars.

Fencing will be installed around the perimeter of the pond while it is an active construction site to ensure the safety of park users. The north parking lot will be closed for public access, as well as a section of the northeast corner of the walking trail that goes around Brighton Park. A detour will be incorporated notifying the public where they can walk.

Major construction activities will include removing the organics layer and riprap within the liner extents, removing two feet of cover and stockpile for later use, compacting subgrade, installing a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), placing two feet of cover over the liner, and revegetating impacted areas.

The south lake will still be functional, enabling waterfowl to move to that body of water while the north lake is under construction.

The fish in the pond are in the process of being caught and relocated to Ken Mitchell Lake with help from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Benefits of installing this liner include saving the city thousands of dollars each year from not having to fill the ponds as frequently, saving on energy bills from having to constantly run the pump at the irrigation well, conservation of natural resources and promotion of sustainability, and helping to maintain a more consistent water level in the pond for fishing and other recreational activities.

Construction should be finished by August of this year.
