City of Brighton lowers residential speed limit to 25 mph

Brighton City Council voted 7-1 March 7 to reduce the City’s residential speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph unless otherwise posted. Residential areas with speed limits lower than 25 mph will not be changed. The decision is part of Brighton's Vision Zero Action Plan, which was introduced in 2018 with the goal of eliminating fatal and severe-injury traffic crashes on City streets.

This change also puts Brighton’s residential speed limit in line with most neighboring municipalities. City staff will begin replacing signage in the coming weeks.

“By modifying our transportation infrastructure, we can better prevent tragedies for drivers, pedestrians, and those using other means of transportation on Brighton’s streets,” said Christopher Montoya, Assistant Director of Public Works. “Crashes are often preventable and speed is a leading cause, so we ask drivers to reduce speeds and help us realize our vision of a City with zero traffic fatalities or serious injuries.”
