Police Investigate Shooting

Brighton Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred on Wednesday, March 15 near 9th Avenue and Bush Street. At 12:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to the area on reports of a disturbance and shots fired. All involved parties fled prior to officer arrival. School Resource Officers were in the immediate area, and additional officers arrived within minutes. Many people were nearby, as this was lunch time for students at surrounding schools. Schools in the area were placed on secure as a precautionary measure.

While responding, officers learned that one victim was transported by personal vehicle to an area urgent care with non-life threatening injuries. Upon initial investigation, officers found multiple shell casings and received information about a vehicle that may have been involved. A vehicle matching the description was contacted by officers as it was entering the parking lot at Prairie View High School. Two juvenile suspects were then taken into custody.

At that time, Prairie View High School was placed on lockdown. Additional officers and multiple law enforcement agencies responded to clear the building and surrounding areas. No additional threats were found, and a controlled release was conducted for students in cooperation with 27J Schools.

As leads developed, additional juveniles believed to be involved were contacted and detained. This shooting is currently under investigation by the Brighton Police Department. Detectives believe this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community. No further information will be released at this time.

We are requesting people who live in the area surrounding 9th Avenue and Bush Street to review any camera footage they may have.
