2025 Traffic Box Mural Project Winners
City of Brighton Announces Finalists for 2025 Traffic Box Mural Project
The City of Brighton is pleased to announce the five adult finalists and one youth finalists for its 2025 Traffic Box Mural Project.
Adult Finalists:
- David Swartz, “Reach”
- Sabu Watanabe III, “Mountain Life”
- Kelsi Nicholson, “Sunflower Field”
- Deborah Ewing, “Butterflies”
- Samantha Pascavis, Fawns in the Field”
Youth Finalists:
- Alexandra Grein, eighth grader, “Storm of the Game”
Earlier this year, the city invited artists to participate in transforming traffic signal boxes into captivating public art installations. The call for art garnered more than 100 submissions. From these, judges selected 15 pieces and sought community input. Approximately 750 votes were received during the weeklong public voting. The selected art will be installed this summer and remain on display for at least two years. In addition to their artwork being showcased in the community, selected artists will also receive a $500 honorarium.

Adult Winners:
David Swartz, Denver, CO: "Reach"
Located at 18th Avenue & Bridge Street
About the artist and artwork: David is a Denver-based artist whose work focuses on the theme of connection, symbolized through water. David's piece, "Reach" symbolizes reaching for your goals, aspiring for more, and spreading your wings to soar. David's artwork is designed to inspire hope and bring a smile to viewer's faces.
Sabu Watanabe III, Brighton, CO: "Mountain Life"
Located at Fulton Avenue & Bromley Lane
About the artist and artwork: Sabu is a husband and father of three and loves spending time with them outdoors. Sabu's artwork captures wildlife and the Rocky Mountains.
Kelsi Nicholson, Parker, CO: "Sunflower Field"
Located at 11th Avenue & Bridge Street
About the artist and artwork: Kelsi is a graphic designer who creates collages inspired by personal passions, showcasing the beauty of Colorado.
Deborah Ewing, Brighton, CO: "Butterflies"
Located at 27th Avenue & Bridge Street
About the artist and artwork: Deborah is a retired art teacher and worked for many years at the Butterfly Pavilion. "Butterflies" is an original watercolor painting of butterflies that can be found in Colorado. From left to right: Queen (mimics the Monarch), Colorado Purple Hairstreak, Pipevine Swallowtail, Variegated Fritillary, and Painted Lady.
Samantha Pascavis, Englewood, CO: "Fawns in the Field"
Located at Telluride Street & Bridge Street
About the artist and artwork: Samantha was born and raised in Colorado and uses her art to celebrate and honor the fauna, flora, and natural surroundings that provided her with a much-needed source of joy and escape throughout her childhood. "Fawns in the Field" represents a pair of fawns hiding amongst field grass against a dusk sky with graphic stars.
Youth Winner
Alexandra Grein, Commerce City, CO: "Storm of the Game"
Located at 8th Avenue & Bridge Street
About the artist and artwork: Alexandra is an eighth grader who not only loves to draw but also loves to play lacrosse. She plays for the Bison Lacrosse Club playing boys lacrosse on their eighth-grade team. Bison Lacrosse Club serves the Brighton, Commerce City, and Thornton areas to provide lacrosse to the area at an affordable rate for all kids to have the opportunity to play lacrosse.
This piece of artwork is focusing on highlighting both men's and women's lacrosse and the continued growth of lacrosse including being an Olympic sport in the next summer games. Also highlighted in this piece is the connection between lacrosse and the native community where it originated.
