Electric Vehicle Charging Station Permitting Checklist

This checklist contains the technical aspects of EVSE installations and is intended to help expedite permitting and use for electric vehicle charging. 

All permit applications for EV charging station installations must include the following documentation and adhere to National Electrical Code (NEC) standards:

Required Documentation 

Contractor Information

  • Name, license number, and contact details

Job Address

  • Full site address where the EV charger will be installed

One-Line Diagram

  • Electrical schematic showing system layout and components

Existing Electrical Service Size

  • Amperage of the current service panel

Site Plan

  • Visual layout of charger location on the property, showing distances, access, and obstructions

Charging Equipment Specifications

  • Manufacturer’s cut sheet including model number and technical data

Engineered Stamped Report (if required)

  • Structural or electrical engineering analysis depending on system size or mounting method

Ballard/Vehicle Protection (if applicable)

  • Details on protective bollards or barriers

Load Calculations

  • Required for systems sized at 7,200W (7.2 kW) or higher

Electrical Code (NEC) Requirements

✔️ Dedicated Circuit

  • EV charging equipment must be on its own branch circuit

✔️ Grounding

  • Proper grounding must be shown on the electrical plan

✔️ GFCI Protection

  • Required if the charger is located in a wet or outdoor location

Electric Vehicle Charging Station Permit Application

Please be preEV permit picturepared to include information related to permitting and installation of electric vehicle chargers/electric service equipment (EVCS/EVSE) in your application for an electrical and/or building permit. Once all required documentation has been uploaded, the review process will begin. This permit will be reviewed by planning and building. Once all reviews are complete, the customer will be notified via email and will be able to pay fees. As soon as fees are paid, the permit will be issued.
