Get ready for low-water gardening made easy! The City of Brighton Utilities Department has once again partnered with conservation nonprofit Resource Central to offer to Brighton residents the Garden In A Box Program. Through this partnership, City of Brighton utility customers can receive a $25 discount off each individual purchase of the program’s water-wise garden kits, while supplies last. Purchase your garden before they sell out.  Sales are now open to the public. Residents can choose from 13 Garden In A Box kits with the $25 discount. Box kits include anywhere from nine to as many as 30 starter plants, with selections ranging from vibrant hardy xeric (low-water) perennials to a pollinator-friendly vegetable garden. Gift certificates are also available for purchase.  These pre-designed kits are tailored to Colorado soil, and the simple plant by number maps take the guesswork out of buying and planting. Plus, the garden kits can help you save around 7,300 gallons of water over the garden’s lifetime compared to a traditional lawn (not to mention savings on your water bill!).  Find the perfect garden for you and your landscape by visiting resourcecentral.org/gardens. To better serve the community, the City of Brighton is launching a new utility billing system on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The updated system will make online bills easier to navigate, provide clearer information, and give residents more convenient ways to manage their accounts.Important payment notice:In order to make this transition, the current utility billing system will be unavailable from March 23 – March 30. During this time, customers will not be able to make utility payments. Customers will begin making payments in the new system when it launches on March 31. To ensure no one is impacted during this downtime, the City will waive late fees for bills due in April and May.  Residents who need help getting set up in the new portal can contact Utilities Customer Service by email, phone, or in person at City Hall during regular business hours. Additionally, three sessions have been scheduled to help customers navigate the new system:

• Wednesday, April 1 from 6 – 7 p.m. at the Brighton Recreation Center (English)
• Thursday, April 2 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the Sue Corbett Active Adult Center at Eagle View (English)
• Friday, April 3 from 2 – 3 p.m. at the Brighton Recreation Center (Spanish)

The City of Brighton has completed a comprehensive Risk and Resilience Assessment of its water utility system— a key milestone in strengthening the reliability and security of our community’s water infrastructure. 

The City of Brighton hired a consultant, WSP USA Inc., to update the plan in accordance with the America’s Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA). This plan was last updated in 2020 and will continue to be updated on a five-year basis. The assessment examines a wide range of possible threats to the water utility, including natural disasters, extreme weather events, power outages, aging infrastructure, cybersecurity, financial and human resource risks. The program also examines the steps the City has already taken to become resilient in our operations, and what opportunities are available for improvement. 

As next steps, the department will update the Emergency Response Plan, and Continuity of Operations plans, to reflect the findings and outline specific actions to prevent, respond to, and recover from potential disruptions. Many of these strategies build on existing practices already in place, while others may inform future planning and capital improvements. 

Updating the plans will achieve goals and tasks identified in the City of Brighton Strategic Plan, Utilities Department Strategic Plan, and the Sustainability Plan. Residents will not experience any changes to their water service because of the assessment, but behind the scenes, the City of Brighton Utilities department will be ready to reduce risk, improve preparedness, and protect public health.

City Council stays updated on capital improvement projects through meetings, site visits, and regular updates. This helps them make the best decisions for our community.

Construction is underway on a new pump station at Lutz Reservoir. Once complete, it will provide non-potable water for things like irrigation to residents and businesses on the southeast side of Brighton.

Crews have started installing precast walls on the main water treatment plant building. As these sections are enclosed, crews can now move inside and begin work on smaller interior components.
