[ARCHIVED] SPEAK Week to offer QPR suicide prevention training

In partnership with the Pennock Center for Counseling, the Brighton Youth Commission will be offering three in-person QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention courses for the community. 

The QPR courses are part of SPEAK (Suicide Prevention Education Awareness Knowledge) Week, which will be held May 1-6. SPEAK Week features a series of in-person events that aim to raise awareness about the prevalence of teen suicide and to educate the community on mental health issues and the stigmas surrounding them. 

Classes are free and will take place on the following dates:

  • Monday, May 1, 8:30 a.m. - Brighton City Hall, Basement
  • Monday, May 1, 5 p.m. - Platte Valley Medical Center, Conference Room A
  • Wednesday, May 3, Noon - Brighton City Hall, Basement

An RSVP is required for any of these classes. Please visit www.speak5k.org to RSVP.

Key components covered in the training include:

  • How to question, persuade and refer someone who may be suicidal
  • How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
  • The common causes of suicidal behavior
  • The warning signs of suicide
  • How to get help for someone in crisis
